The Mine Superintendent, reporting to the General Manager, is responsible for mine planning and production across the concession's trenching and mining operations, and for the wash plant processing that follows. The job holder supervises the Mining Supervisor (load and haul) and the Wash Plant Supervisor, and through them the excavator operators, front-end loader operators, tipper truck drivers and plant crew. Working jointly with the Head Geologist, the job holder authorises release of mining blocks for trial mining and maintains the mining block register and rolling production schedule. The job holder is also responsible for daily production reconciliation and KPI tracking, for the mine fleet's ability to meet plant throughput as haul distances grow, and for site safety standards on the mining and processing faces, while assisting the General Manager in his / her daily functions.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety and legal compliance: implement standards and regulations pertaining to environment, employee health and safety in liaison with the HS&E manager.
Mine planning: design a sustainable mine plan and be able to generate related budgets (capex and opex)
Own the day-to-day mine plan and production targets across the trenching and mining programme, translating the rolling 30/60/90-day mining schedule into daily and weekly operating instructions for the mining and haulage crews.
Supervise the Mining Supervisor (load and haul) and, through them, the excavator operators, front-end loader operators and tipper truck drivers.
Supervise the Wash Plant Supervisor and plant crew (day and night shifts, including mining assistants), coordinating mine output with plant throughput requirements.
Jointly with the Head Geologist, authorise release of mining blocks for trial mining, weighing cut-off grade, stripping ratio, plant recovery and haul economics.
Jointly with the Head Geologist, define and maintain the mining block register, tracking each block's status from planned through to mined out and rehabilitated.
Own daily production reconciliation and the standing KPIs (BCM/day, tonnes/day, grade, plant throughput, recovery %, cash cost/tonne, equipment availability), signing off jointly with the Head Geologist and Plant Superintendent.
Monitor mine fleet sufficiency — excavators, tipper trucks and front-end loaders — as haul distance grows, and flag additional equipment requirements to the Operations & Logistics Manager ahead of any shortfall.
Ensure trenching and mining crews follow site safety protocols — open-trench barricading and spotter protocols, low-gear/speed control on haul roads, and plant lock-out/tag-out — in coordination with the HSE & Security Officer.
Coordinate the sequencing of trenching and mining teams as work advances from one river to the next across the concession.
Contribute mine-planning input to regulatory and licensing matters affecting mining operations, working with the HR & Regulatory Manager as required.
Monitor equipment utilisation, availability and fuel economics against budget, working with the Operations & Logistics Manager on maintenance scheduling.
Prepare production and reconciliation reports for the General Manager and any other ad-hoc reports as requested.
Enforce discipline in the department using the Labour Law
Perform all other duties as and when assigned by the management.
Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Degree or diploma in Mining Engineering, Geology and any other related field.
Recognised mine manager's / mine overseer's certificate of competency, or eligibility to obtain one, as required by Angolan mining regulations.
At least 8 – 10 years of experience in open-pit or alluvial mining operations, including experience at supervisory or superintendent level.
Experience with trenching / alluvial gold operations preferred.
Working knowledge of mine planning, block scheduling, grade control and production reconciliation.
Sound understanding of mining fleet management — excavators, haul trucks and front-end loaders — and haulage cycle economics.
Computer literacy, including MS Excel and mine planning / production reporting software.
